If you have purchased
your foot orthotics from Progressive, they have been carefully
made specifically for you "in house". In other words, we
made them for you - they were not sent out town to be made by
someone who has never seen your feet. Additionally, adjustments
can be made in our office, usually while you wait.
When you are first fitted with your
Orthotics, you will notice that they take up a considerable
amount of room in your shoes. As you wear them they will
slightly compress leaving more room in the shoes. If you
have received multiple pairs it is very important to
alternate the pairs daily to extend the life of them.
Foot Inspection
You should at least daily
inspect your bare feet for bright red marks, blisters,
calluses, or any other changes. It is ordinary to have
some slight discoloration or pinkness, but watch for skin
breakdown or sores and be aware of areas that are painful.
If you are diabetic, it is very important to monitor the
condition of your feet, so we recommend that for the first
two weeks in your inserts you check your feet three times a
day, and from then on twice a day.
Proper wearing
You must wear socks with your
orthotics, and we recommend that orthotics be worn in a new
pair of shoes. If your inlays are 3/4 the length of your
foot, you should be able to fit into most lace style shoes.
If your inserts are full length, however, you will most
likely find it more comfortable to wear an extra depth shoe.
Extra depth shoes are made with a thick generic inlay that
can be removed to allow for more depth. As to socks, a
thick sock that absorbs perspiration well is good.
Diabetic socks and edema socks are great for those with
special concerns. If you would like to purchase an
extra depth shoe, or diabetic/edema socks, we carry a wide
range from several manufacturers. Simply call us and
set up an appointment.
Cleaning your inserts
To clean your inserts, wipe
them clean with a damp, and let them dry overnight. If
they are heavily soiled, use a mild detergent and cold
water to clean them. Never use a heat source to
dry your inserts, as using a heat source on your inserts
will cause them to lose their custom shape and they will no
longer be uniquely formed to your feet. Instead, allow your
inserts to air dry.
